Neurodiversity is an umbrella term that incorporates Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, Down Syndrome, Dementia, and traumatic brain injuries among others. Neurodiversity affirming care is all about understanding and accepting brain-based disability.
At Children Matter, we use our understanding of neurodiversity to treat all children with accommodation and acceptance. Our approach is always inclusive and never one-size-fits-all. All of our goals and strategies are tailored to each individual child.
Our therapy approach is centered around your child's interests and strengths. By letting children lead and following along, we are able to target their goals in ways that are motivating, engaging, and memorable to them. Most importantly, this model fosters a sense of autonomy and makes room for children with a range of abilities.
Children Matter now provides evaluations and ongoing therapy for AAC users!
1. Who needs AAC?
Anyone who has difficulty with reliable spoken communication can benefit from an AAC device. Common diagnoses include but are not limited to: Autism, Apraxia, Expressive Language Disorder, Down Syndrome, Anxiety. That being said, ALL people reserve the right to a robust communication system so that they can say what they want to say, when they want to say it, however they want to say it!
2. Will a device keep my child from learning to speak?
NO. Research has shown that using high tech, robust AAC actually accelerates the rate at which people learn language. Many people start using "mouth words" soon after being introduced to a device. Remember that everyone uses alternative communication in the forms of texting, writing, gestures, etc.
3. What's the process?
When choosing an AAC system for a client, we match the features of many various systems against the person's needs. As a rule of thumb, we give them access to as many buttons as they can physically see and touch, NOT what we think they can understand.
To do this, the SLP and child will explore different systems during therapy visits until the right device/vocabulary/software is chosen. Next, your SLP will write up an evaluation for insurance funding. A visit to your PCP will be needed to discuss medical necessity, and then your SLP will be able to submit all paperwork to insurance and device companies. Once insurance has approved funding for the device, it will be shipped and owned by you.
We understand that navigating your child's needs can be difficult. We believe the parent is the best teacher, so our therapy services will include supporting you in ways that are personalized, lasting, and effective so you can stay actively involved in your child's progress. Therapy services in the home provide excellent opportunities for you to participate in treatment hands-on!
Getting to know your child's unique sensory needs is fundamental for providing them the most effective treatment possible. Through use of the private sensory room, the shared therapy gym, or the arts & crafts room, we can provide an environment for anyone to feel at home. Our clinic is well stocked with multi-sensory toys and supports!
